I have been taking self defense and kickboxing with Combat FMA for a couple of years now. I have really learned a lot in surprising ways about how to move the body and avoid being hurt by an attacker. One thing that I find to be most interesting is the muscle memory involved in fighting and self defense moves. With enough practice and repetition, it becomes second nature for you in a panic or attack situation. If you practice long enough, you will have a better chance of defending yourself in an attack, because your brain will kick into auto pilot mode. It's a great metal exercise, a lot harder mentally than it looks which makes a really great mental and physical workout. I am pleased with my fitness results as a side effect as well. The fitness part of it is actually also better than any gym workout. It's pretty insane because you have to think so much while learning that you don't focus as much on the body shredding while you do it.
